Getting the most out of your Kuul Evaporative Media

Guest author, Jessica Decker’s note: As we continue to expand our customer service experience, we will offer tips on this blog for our Kuul fixed system customers. These lines – Vitality and Control – of Kuul evaporative media are primarily used in agriculture, HVAC, data center, and power generation applications.

We understand product longevity is important to you and your operation. To ensure you get the most out of your Kuul evaporative cooling pads, we have put together some best maintenance practice tips that will extend the life of your media so it can keep working hard for you.

The water you use with your evaporative media is a key component of keeping your media at its best. Your water supply should have a pH less than 8 and greater than 6. It is recommended users continue to check water quality over time to ensure levels are consistent both for pH and scaling. It is also important that the water supply be free of excessive dissolved solids and nutrients. Reverse osmosis or deionized water should be avoided.

Setting up a regular routine in the maintenance of your evaporative media can help reduce wear and tear on the product. This starts by keeping on/off wetting cycles to a minimum. However, we do recommend that users allow the media to dry completely once every 24 hours. Providing complete water distribution across the evaporative media system will help avoid dry streaks, increase efficiency, and ensure adequate washing.

Another important part of having a maintenance routine includes conducting preventative measures regularly. Taking the time early on to maintain and clean the evaporative media can save you time and money down the road. When cleaning the media, use disinfectants at low and safe concentrations per manufacturer guidelines. Harsh chemicals can affect the integrity of the media. At Portacool, LLC, manufacturer of Kuul evaporative media, we recommend using chlorine at 1-2 ppm (parts per million) as a beneficial disinfectant on your Kuul evaporative media.

This disinfection, along with a regularly maintained system can help prevent heavy algae growth or scale deposits from forming that can affect the integrity of the media. Should you find damaged or clogged pieces of media during a system check, a soft-bristled brush can be used to remove heavy debris. Finally, to help the longevity of the media, ensure that both it and the sump are shaded from direct sunlight.

When proper maintenance is done correctly and regularly, it will allow large debris wash-off, minimal living organism development, low mineral concentrations in the sump and will ensure damage is not caused by aggressive water treatments. Kuul evaporative media is engineered to be resistant to hostile environments, but using proper maintenance practices for cleanliness, hygiene, and scale control as we have outlined are paramount to ensuring product longevity.
